Dell Bids Adieu To Five Inch Streak
Computer manufacturing giant, Dell Computers Australia is betting on larger tablet devices and bidding farewell to the 5 inch Streak device as it seeks to aggressively compete with Apple’s popular iPad product.
Recently the company posted on its website that it was saying “Goodbye” and that “It’s been a great ride.”
In the end the 5 inch streak device failed to pose a serious challenge to the Apple iPad, and the company is now focusing instead on 7 and 10 inch devices that are similar to the form factor of the iPad which currently dominates the market for tablets.
The Dell Streak was launched in August of last year, and from the very start it had a number of defects, its screen size was not that much larger than rivals, and its resolution was lower, it also came with a dated version of Android, despite a much more advanced version already on the market. Dell also priced the device poorly, the 5 inch Streak cost US$300 on contract or $550 out of the box, which is just $50 more expensive than the most basic first generation iPad.
As a result Dell was simply not able to provide a credible alternative to the iPad which has derived great benefit from its first mover advantage in the tablet segment.
Despite ending its experiment with a five inch device, Dell has not surrendered the tablet segment to Apple, with chief executive Michael Dell predicting that Android tablet devices will eventually outgrow Apple as it did in the smartphone segment.
Dell is now focusing on its 7 and 10 inch devices, pricing its 7 inch offering aggressively at around $200 when rebates are included. However the device remains plagued by bugs in the software and a poor display.
Dell is also focusing on the 10 inch segment, with company launching an Android powered tablet in China exclusively in the China market last week. The company has not announced its plans for America, saying that the market in the US lacks direction and is highly fragmented.

Dell Launches 10 Inch Android Powered Tablet In China
Dell, which trades in this country as Dell Australia has apparently launched its first 10 inch tablet offering according to the news agency Dow Jones. In June it was widely reported the computer manufacturer would launch a 10 inch tablet device that runs on Android, which would be released in China first.
The new device is the third tablet offering from Dell, and its first 10 inch version that will compete with products from Apple and Motorola.
The device is 12 milimeteres thick, weighs roughly 700 grams, and comes with dual rear and front facing cameras front (including a 5-megapixel camera), is made using edge-to-edge glass, a brushed aluminum back full 1080p video playback, an SD slot, and an Nvidia Tegra dual-core processor.
Tablet fans who decide they would like one, can buy one for less than $500, and the device is capable of docking with multiple ports, running HDMI video, as well as the ability to run separate Citrix sessions on external monitors, and an Ethernet port, among other features.
In June Dell said it did not intend to launch a device in the highly fragmented and unsettled US tablet market, since the company does not believe it offers a viable business opportunity right now.
“This…avoids a bunch of the inhibitors and barriers to success that we’ve seen in the U.S. market,” said John Thode Dell vice president and manager of Dell’s mobility business . “Things like confusion over what exactly Android is bringing to the table.”
Dell says it will release a 10 inch tablet device in America later in the year, though it remains unclear exactly when. Currently Dell has a range of smaller tablet devices and a hybrid offering.
In China Dell has a store network of over 10,000 shops that stock its products, and by the end of the year the country will have roughly 2,000 service centres.

Leaked Documents Suggest Dell Readying Launch Of Windows 8 Tablet
Dell which trades in this country as Dell Computers Australia could well be the first PC manufacturer to launch a tablet that will be ready to work with Windows 8. According to a recently leaked document, the tablet will begin selling in October, and initially be powered by Windows 7.
The device is codenamed Peju, though the likely official name of the tablet will most probably be The Dell Latitude ST, and is squarely aimed at a specific audience despite a daunting array of competing products.
A website calling itself the Dell Peju Insider has already popped up, claiming to offer “Inside updates from Dell insiders. 10″ tablet running windows 7 with all the features you expect from a business tool.”
Whilst it is possible the site is spoof or fake, it is also equally possible that the site is a marketing tactic, with the company not confirming any of the details mentioned on the site, but also not moving to shut the site down. Dell Laptop Coupons seems quite content at this stage to allow the leak to create a buzz.
The device according to the site suggests the device will have a 10.1 inch screen and will be 0.63 inches thick, weighing less than two pounds, which for a tablet device is a little on the heavy side. Beyond the slightly plump form factor, the device is alleged to be powered by an Intel Core i5 processor, featuring 4GB of RAM, and 64GB or 120GB SSD storage options.
Apparently the device will be called the Latitude ST, and to begin with, will come installed with Windows 7 Professional, though the website claims that the device will be compatible with Windows 8.
Other features include 2 USB ports, mini VGA, HDMI, microSD, audio jack, and a SIM card slot for 3G wireless connectivity. front and rear facing cameras (1.3 megapixel front camera, and 5 megapixel rear).
The leak details claim that the battery life of the device measures an impressive six to eight hours, and comes with a docking stations, that angles it as if it is a monitor on the desktop.
The leaked details claim an impressive six to eight hours of battery life from the Dell tablet. The docking station has three USB ports, gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, and audio out. The tablet can connect with either a USB or Bluetooth external keyboard (neither of which is included with the tablet or the docking station).
According to the website, we can expect an official launch of the device in October, with a hefty price tag of US$1,000 it is unlikely going to be positioned as a serious rival to the iPad, but may find strong success as a professional workhorse.

As Lenovo Gears Up To Expand Beyond China It Announces New Range Of Tablets
Lenovo Group, which trades in this country as Lenovo Computers Australia is preparing to launch two Android powered tablets and a tablet that will run an operating system for tablets developed by Microsoft in the US this summer, according to the company president, as the company gears up to embark on its stated strategy of expanding beyond its key domestic market of China.
Lenovo Coupons is the world’s fourth largest PC maker and often described as the world’s fasted growing, having become a global player after the transformational acquisition of International Business Machine Corp’s (IBM) PC business in 2005.
Since then the company has developed an array of products including its smartphone offering dubbed the LePhone, which in Putonghua means “Happy Phone” and a touchscreen tablet dubbed the LePad. Both devices run on the Android operating system, and are currently available only in China.
Rory Read, Lenovo Group’s president and chief operating officer, in a recent interview with Dow Jones said that the company was planning a global tablet release aimed at consumers scheduled for later in the year, with the most likely release date in July, followed by a tablet device aimed at its key enterprise segment likely to roll out in August.
Both devices according to Mr. Read will be powered by Honeycomb, the version of Android specially developed for tablets as opposed to phones, and will have 10-inch screens.
Mr. Read says that pricing will cater towards the mainstream, with a range of between US$450 to $900 depending on the configuration of the tablet.
The consumer version will be dubbed “IdeaPad,” while the business version–which will include a stylus for signature capture–will be branded for the ThinkPad line acquired from IBM, he said.
Additionally Lenovo Coupons says it will roll out a 10 inch tablet that will run on the Windows operating system, well before Windows 8 is launched, since the company believes there is much interest. Lenovo also plans to launch 7 inch tablets later in the cycle.
“We’ve really been working to tailor the experience” of our tablets, Read said. “Some of the early-generation Android devices were a little ahead of their time, and what we’re doing here is making sure [our tablets] are strong. We only have one opportunity to make that first good impression.”

Dell Eschews The US In Favour Of A China Launch For Its Ten Inch Tablet
PC manufacturing giant Dell, which trades in the country as Dell Computers Australia, says it intends to launch its much anticipated 10-inch tablet in China first rather than the US, because according to Dell, the company increasingly believes that The US market is not yet mature enough for a successful launch of an Android powered tablet.
The Dell Streak 10 Pro will be rolled out in China over the summer, and will hit the US market sometime in 2012 according to John Thode, who is a VP at in the company’s mobility division. Mr. Thode says that America does not yet present a viable market for a 10-inch tablet as of now.
“This is not an either-or for us. This is a choice about where is the best place to take our story and avoids a bunch of the inhibitors and barriers to success that we’ve seen in the U.S. market,” Thode said. “Things like confusion over what exactly Android is bringing to the table [and] an immature platform and roll out of devices that weren’t quite ready yet.”
Dell Computers Australia has a range of smaller tablets including the Dell Streak 5 and 7 as well as a hybrid Inspiron Duo, all of which are available in the US. The company has yet to roll out a competitor product to the rival 9.7 inch iPad.
“China is the largest in the emerging market category and the second fastest-growing in the emerging market category. And China is also our second largest market right after the U.S.,” said Amit Midha, chairman of Dell Greater China. “The China market in units may cross the U.S. in the next couple of years,” he said, underscoring the importance of the market to Dell.
According to Mr. Midha, Dell products are sold through roughly 10,000 retail outlets in China, and by the end of 2011, the number of service centres will have been increased to 2,000.
Mr. Thode also cited problems with U.S. Telcos. “Even simple things like distribution channels that are controlled by the carriers with pricing models that are completely upside down to adoption [of a tablet],” he said about the U.S. market.
He continued. “We looked at all of that and we said, well wait a minute, that instead of trying to swim upstream let’s go some place where the growth rates are much more interesting, the adoption rates are much faster, the consumer is much more savvy…it became one of those aha moments,” he said, again speaking to the myriad problems in the U.S. Android tablet market.”
The sentiment expressed by Dell echoes criticism from Nividia whose chief executive also said that tablets other than the iPad have so far not proved to be successful in the US, for many of the reasons Dell cites.
The Dell Streak 10 is Dell’s third tablet product and its first 10-inch Android-based tablet.

Sneak Preview At Windows 8
Many industry watchers have been excited about Windows 8 for quite a while now, earlier in the week Microsoft demonstrated some of the overhauls that are expected to come to both tablets and desktops that are look very similar to the Windows Phone OS, run on handsets like the Venue Pro, sold by Dell Australia.
Perhaps the biggest change is that the new interface makes use of a start page that uses the tile based Metro User Interface that many users of Windows Phone like the Venue Pro, sold by Dell Australia have come to love, and now takes the place of the traditional start menu. From the start page, users can quickly launch full screen HTML 5 powered applications, and seamlessly switch between them, or snap them together at the side of the screen for side by side touch screen multitasking.
The new operating system does not mean the end of the desktop application of course. For those running Windows 8 on their desktop, users may simply head into the extremely familiar Windows desktop which will enable them to run their usual applications in traditional Windows mode. As yet, it still remains unclear exactly how this will work, since this is still quite a look at a very new operating system, and things are more than likely going to change, however as MS’s Management says in the video, you will be able to use Windows 8 across all machines, desktop, laptop, and tablet.
