Lenovo ThinkPad T410 Review
Last year Lenovo launched the ThinkPad T410, and it was an impressive laptop which improved on a solid business laptop. The 2011 version of this model has just been released and once again the formula has been improved upon.
In the latest version Lenovo has upgraded the processor and now uses Nvidia Optimus graphics technology which utilizes auto switching capability, which loosely translates into switching on the graphics chip only when it is needed and at all other times using integrated graphics, which has the effect of saving on battery life.
The laptop weighs in at 3 pounds, less than 1 inch thick has a plethora of ports and a 14.1 inch LED backlit screen which has a resolution of 1440 X 900 which is substantially better than competing laptops from other makers.
The ThinkPad brand has always managed to maintain a business centric style and the T410 continues this tradition. The familiar matte-black chassis certainly isn’t what you’d call flashy, but it has a sturdy feel, and the finish is smudge-resistant.
The ThinkPad T410 is a laptop that road warriors will love, featuring a durable exterior and offering speedy performance.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 Review
Perhaps the most dynamic area in the recent history of consumer electronics is the mobile computing segment, and whilst the craze for netbooks is now starting to fizzle, smartphones have begun their remarkable transformation into min PC’s in their own right, and tablet devices representing the dawn of a new era of computing on the go.
With the myriad of choices now available the trusty laptop is still the most capable option, and Lenovo’s IdeaPad U260 says it wants to be your “thin, light, stylish travel companion”
The Lenovo U260 costs roughly $1000, and is powered by an upgraded processor compared to when it was first launch and a custom Clementine Orange paint scheme.
The laptop utilises an Intel ULV Core i5-470UM operating at 1.33 GHz, with Intel HD graphics, 4GB of RAM, a Hitachi 320GB 5400 RPM hard drive, integrated Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 1000, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, a 4-cell Li-Polymer battery and a 12.5″ HD AntiGlare 1366 x 768 display.

The screen also functions like a touch screen and according to Lenovo.

And because the touch screen is a normal glass overlay, you can safely clean and disinfect it—perfect for healthcare personnel”
We all know that the entire world is currently focused on mobile devices and the latest smartphones, despite that fascination, when one is sitting in their office, a big screen lets the user be as productive as they can be.

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 Review
It is very rare that one gets the opportunity to call a laptop sexy, however with the introduction of Lenovo’s IdeaPad U260 that is exactly what we get to do. The U260 is the lightest and thinnest laptop we have used to date, cased in bronze it both looks and feels nice.
Lenovo offers two colour options, either mocha brown or clementine orange, both of which look stylish and professional complementing the magnesium alloy casing.
Whilst the display size of 12.5 inches is unusual for a laptop it manages to keep the notebook’s profile very low. The multi touch track pad has a glass coating that makes using it a tactile delight.
Using the U260 is simply delightful its light weight makes it feel great when grabbing it for quick sessions. Video play back is good quality and the display is adequate in bright sunlight. The keyboard of the U260 is typically good for a Lenovo laptop. Lenovo has used some unique technology in its keyboard which makes it spill resistant by enabling it to “breathe” The keyboard allows air to enter keeping the thing components cool with air circulation which means that despite being so thin the laptop never runs hot.
The two mouse buttons beneath the track pad are well-placed and work solidly. There is no hardware button to turn the track pad off for those who prefer to use an external mouse.
The main drawback of the U260 however is its battery life. Since the battery is sealed in the casing to maintain its small size. The battery is made up of four cells and provides 3.5 to 4 hours of real usage, and less for tasks which require more processing power such as streaming.
If you don’t require using your laptop for long work sessions away from a power source, then the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a good option. It is both enjoyable to use and capable of handling tasks that would give most netbooks a hard time.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 Review
Lenovo’s ThinkPad range of laptops are lightweight, but have a reputation as being on the expensive side of business computing machines. Despite that costly perception, Lenovo has for quite some time now in fact got a range of inexpensive laptops.
Lenovo Australia launched the range with the advent of the inexpensive and ultra portable ThinkPad X100e which weighed in at just 1.5 kg. Despite its price and weight the laptop generated huge amounts of heat as a result of its AMD Neo processor, which also meant that the battery drained of power very quickly.
Despite the initial flaw, hopes for a better incarnation in the ThinkPad Edge 11 are much higher, especially since it uses the Core i3 processor, a low voltage offering from Intel. The laptop weighs in at 1.5 kg and skips the traditional all black boxy ThinkPad styling, instead opting for a more modern look which makes use of a glossy red or matt black lid.
Though not the most stylish device on the market, it does indeed manage to hold its own. The ThinkPad Edge 11 is not as rigid as other models in the range, but continues in the tradition of being reasonably sturdy.
Perhaps more important than its design is the fact that the laptop has a much longer battery life than its predecessor and managed to run for seven hours when tested under light usage such as browsing the internet. The battery also performs relatively well under more processor intensive tests which require more energy such as image editing, managing to maintain power for three hours.
One drawback however is that the ThinkPad Edge 11 comes with only 2GB of RAM as opposed to the more preferable 4GB, which can be obtained on other machines for the same price. Whilst using the laptop its under belly does warm, but does not do so uncomfortably like its previous incarnation the X11e.
The ThinkPad series is renowned for comfortable and accurate keyboard, and the ThinkPad Edge 11 does not depart from this tradition. The keyboard features large and response keys, making typing both error free and comfortable. There are however some strange layout features such as the Fn key replacing the position of the control key. Punctuation, page up and down keys are also smaller than the other keys.
The ThinkPad Edge 11 features a touchstick which will please long term users but may confuse first time buyers. First timers however will be glad with the presence of a touchpad, which though on the small side, is accurate.
The laptop features a 13.3 inch widescreen display, and as would be expected comes with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The image quality is unfortunately not that impressive, with poor viewing angles and shifting colour accuracy depending on seating position.
The ThinkPad Edge 11 comes with 64 bit Windows 7 pre-installed, and comes with a 320 GB hard drive. The 64 bit enables users to add up to 4GB of RAM and also use all that extra memory.
Additional security features such as a finger print reader do not exist, which is expected given the price of the laptop, and 3G capability is not built in. Users wanting an integrated 3G modem built into the laptop will have to pay more for the privilege.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 Review
Earlier this year computer manufacturing giant Lenovo launched the IdeaPad Y560, a premium 15-inch home entertainment laptop featuring JBL speakers and dual graphics mode. The model is packed to the hilt with the latest hardware features and offers fantastic performance for its asking price.
In terms of look and feel little has changed with the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560, which has the familiar dark brown coffee colour as its predecessors. The only substantial difference is with its screen lid which has a patterned smooth matte finish, designed to make it look classier. The model weighs 2.6 pounds with a standard six cell battery used for 15-inch laptops.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 comes equipped with a 1.3 megapixel camera which is nestled on its 15-inch screen’s top bezel. The camera enables users to undertake video chats and the model comes bundled with YouCam software making capturing and uploading photos and video to YouTube and Flickr a cinch.
The IdeaPad Y560 comes equipped with a glossy LED backlit 15.6-inch display, which has a maximum resolution of 1366×768 pixels. The screen is well lit and offers good contrast and brightness levels, displaying both movies and text well indoors.
The IdeaPad Y560 features a slightly raised keyboard, with keys that are tightly packed, making typing an enjoyable experience. Typing for long periods of time is almost no problem, which provides great tactile feedback. The excellent touch pad is larger compared to other 15-inch laptops, supporting multiple gestures including pinch to zoom, and two finger scroll.
No other laptop in the PC World Top 5 mainstream laptop list can match the Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 configuration, which features:
- Intel Core i5-520M 2.66-GHz processor — with Turbo Boost and Hyper Threading support
- 4GB of DDR3 RAM
- 500GB hard drive
- ATI Radeon HD 5730 discrete graphics
- 1GB of RAM and onboard Intel GMA HD
- Four USB ports
- HDMI and eSATA ports
- VGA-out and Gigabit Ethernet
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1 support.
- 8x DVD writer, card reader and ExpressCard slots
- 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium operating system.
Lenovo has clearly thought out the placement of ports IdeaPad Y560, for example the Wi-Fi switch is placed on the front end of the laptop which is extremely useful. The volume control buttons have been placed on the right side of the laptops keyboard, and the touch-sensitive Lenovo SlideNav buttons above the keyboard — all things that are actually useful. OneKey Theater and SlideNav touch-sensitive buttons are placed above the keyboard.
Lenovo also provides a range of proprietary software for the IdeaPad Y560, for example DirectShare allows users to easily share data across multiple PC’s. The laptop also comes equipped with Intel WiDi supprt (wireless display), a feature which enables the user to stream video content directly from the laptop to the users televisions wirelessly.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Y560 home entertainment laptop is a great all purpose machine, with a great hardware configuration and providing good performance, including gaming, all for a reasonable price. All in all we highly recommend it.
