Dell Eschews The US In Favour Of A China Launch For Its Ten Inch Tablet
PC manufacturing giant Dell, which trades in the country as Dell Computers Australia, says it intends to launch its much anticipated 10-inch tablet in China first rather than the US, because according to Dell, the company increasingly believes that The US market is not yet mature enough for a successful launch of an Android powered tablet.
The Dell Streak 10 Pro will be rolled out in China over the summer, and will hit the US market sometime in 2012 according to John Thode, who is a VP at in the company’s mobility division. Mr. Thode says that America does not yet present a viable market for a 10-inch tablet as of now.
“This is not an either-or for us. This is a choice about where is the best place to take our story and avoids a bunch of the inhibitors and barriers to success that we’ve seen in the U.S. market,” Thode said. “Things like confusion over what exactly Android is bringing to the table [and] an immature platform and roll out of devices that weren’t quite ready yet.”
Dell Computers Australia has a range of smaller tablets including the Dell Streak 5 and 7 as well as a hybrid Inspiron Duo, all of which are available in the US. The company has yet to roll out a competitor product to the rival 9.7 inch iPad.
“China is the largest in the emerging market category and the second fastest-growing in the emerging market category. And China is also our second largest market right after the U.S.,” said Amit Midha, chairman of Dell Greater China. “The China market in units may cross the U.S. in the next couple of years,” he said, underscoring the importance of the market to Dell.
According to Mr. Midha, Dell products are sold through roughly 10,000 retail outlets in China, and by the end of 2011, the number of service centres will have been increased to 2,000.
Mr. Thode also cited problems with U.S. Telcos. “Even simple things like distribution channels that are controlled by the carriers with pricing models that are completely upside down to adoption [of a tablet],” he said about the U.S. market.
He continued. “We looked at all of that and we said, well wait a minute, that instead of trying to swim upstream let’s go some place where the growth rates are much more interesting, the adoption rates are much faster, the consumer is much more savvy…it became one of those aha moments,” he said, again speaking to the myriad problems in the U.S. Android tablet market.”
The sentiment expressed by Dell echoes criticism from Nividia whose chief executive also said that tablets other than the iPad have so far not proved to be successful in the US, for many of the reasons Dell cites.
The Dell Streak 10 is Dell’s third tablet product and its first 10-inch Android-based tablet.

Dell Inspiron M501R Review
The Dell Inspiron M501R is a 15inch laptop which comes with lots of useful features, tons of processing power making it capable of multitasking. The laptop is powered by an AMD Phenom II N850 triple-core CPU, comes with 500 GB of hard drive space, 4GB of RAM and an AMD Mobility Radeon 550v graphics chip.
The Inspiron M501R can be used for almost every task with the exception of hardcore gaming, making it suitable for everyone except of course hardcore gamers.
The Inspiron M501R’s design is rather plain, and its ports are located spaciously around the chassis edges. The laptop comes with HDMI, VGA, USB 2.0 (four), 100Mbps Ethernet and eSATA ports. There is also an SD card reader and a built-in DVD burner.
The keyboard is full sized, which means the keys are easy to hit, and the touchpad and palm rest are spacious. The keyboard has no short cut buttons above it, but the function keys have their functions reversed, which means you will not have to first press the Fn key to adjust the screen or media and volume controls.
The screen is reflective and the finish a little glossy, which makes the laptop a little uncomfortable to use, especially if you are using the M501R outdoors, where the refelction effect is significant.
The triple-core Dell Inspiron M501R is a useful all-round computer, which can be put to a variety of uses including office works, and difficult multimedia tasks such as transcoding or editing video. The laptop can even be used as a Media Centre or Personal Video Recorder if you plug in a USB based digital TV tuner.
The battery life of the triple core Inspiron M501R is its weak point, lasting on 1 hour and 31 minutes in a run down test, where power management was disabled, screen brightness maximized and Wi-Fi and loop an Xvid-encoded video encoded.
With power management enabled and the screen on low brightness the Inspiron M501R should deliver 2 hours of battery life.
All in all its powerful laptop and a viable option to look at for those users who are not hardcore road warriors and have access to a power source when using their laptops. Dell Australia has launched the model in the country already.

Dell Inspiron 14R-1181MRB Review
The Dell Inspiron 14R-1181MRB is a attractive and good looking 14-inch laptop, however that does not always translate in good performing, and the notebook does have trouble in measuring up to rival models from other makers. The Inspiron 14R-1181MRB does provide a solid user experience and along with its roomy hard drive does provide some compensation for its lack of speed.
The Inspiron 14R-1181MRB has an elegant design which looks like it is made from blushed metal, with a keyboard surrounded by Aluminium. The keyboard is traditional rather than the current trendy chiclet configuration that many manufacturers now favour. As a result they provide a firm typing experience. The dark grey touchpad supports multi-touch gestures.
The 14-inch widescreen display has a native resolution of 1366 X 768 and connects to the body of the laptop using a hinge-forward design which is new for Dell. The laptop weighs in at 4.9 pounds making it marginally heavier than other models in its class, but not by enough so it is inconvenient to carry.
The Inspiron 14R-1181MRB is powered by a dual-core 2.53-GHz Intel Core i3-M380 processor and comes with 4GB of RAM, which can be increased to 8GB, the hard drive has 500 GB of storage and runs at 5,400 rpm.
The laptop’s ports are well laid out, the power jack, the external VGA monitor connection and a single USB 2.0 port are all located on the back of the laptop.
On the left edge of the machine is where the Ethernet and HDMI ports are located, as well as a 7-in-1 card reader, and a combo USB 2.0–eSATA jack for hooking up an external hard drive or other kinds of devices.
The right edge of the laptop hose an additional USB 2.0 port as well as the microphone and headphone jacks, and the DVD burner. The 1.3 megapixel webcam is in its traditional location in the centre.
The 14R-1181MRB comes with 802.11n Wi-Fi and built-in Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth.
The Inspiron 14R-1181MRB is adequate for routine everyday tasks such as browsing the internet or editing a document, however its performance in other areas such as transcoding and rendering video is lacking. The laptop is not well suited to 3D gaming either largely as a result of its use of an integrated Intel HD Graphics. Normal games however run fine on the laptop, anything to demanding though will not.
The battery life is of the 14R-1181MRB is not all that either, Dell Australia touts the 6-cell battery has having up to 5 hours and 15 minutes of battery life, however testing suggests it only delivers 3 hours and 45 minutes.
The Dell Inspiron 14R-1181MRB is a stylish machine but unfortunately has trouble living up to its sleekness and is outclassed by competing laptops from other manufacturers.

Dell Inspiron Duo – Review
The Dell Inspiron Duo is a convertible, the device for want of a better word can literally convert itself from a small netbook into a tablet, which makes it heavier than most other tablet devices. The Inspiron Duo weighs in at 1.54 kg compared to the 0.68kg that the iPad weighs.
The Inspiron Duo, unlike the iPad comes with 2 USB ports and since it does not just function solely as a tablet device, it is quite reasonable that it weighs a bit more The Duo comes with a 10.1 inch display, 2GB of RAM and 1.5GHz processor.
The main differentiator however is the ability to plug in flash drives and play large video files immediately without having to sync. The inbuilt camera is an added bonus allowing the use of programs like Skype. The camera however does not function when the device is in tablet mode, because it is not attached to the front facing frame of the screen.
The main drawback with the Inspiron Duo is its use of Windows 7 as the operating system for a tablet hybrid. Windows 7 is simply not optimized for hand held devices such as mobiles or tablets in the way iOS is.
When trying to close a window on a Windows 7 powered tablet the user needs to very precise, and that involves usually having to hit the close button a number of times before the user is able to close it.
Dell of course was well aware of that Windows 7 was not the best operating system for a tablet, so the device comes with proprietary software from Dell which is meant to make it easier to use and browse. The software makes the buttons on the screen larger when the device is functioning in tablet mode. However, the software is really slow to load. But this may just be because the unit sent to review was pre-production.
The device looks and feels nice, however occasionally the fan lets out some heat highlighting the fact that it is not merely a dedicated tablet, but rather a netbook as well.
The device also has the ability to dock in a speaker station for an added cost of course, which gives the user a better audio experience and adds extras USB and Ethernet ports.
Overall, the duo, if ever released by Dell Australia, is ideal for those that can’t decide whether they want a tablet or netbook.

Dell Release Of Tablet Netbook Hybrid Imminent
Computer manufacturing giant Dell is expected to launch the first phase of the roll out of its highly anticipated hybrid tablet laptop in the US as early as Thursday as the company seeks to capture a larger share of the market for tablet devices from rival Apple.
Dell is expected to disclose pre sale information of the 10-inch Inspiron Duo this week according to an unnamed industry source cited by CNET in its report.
According to the report Dell will make announcement early next week, by which point the Duo will be available for order in America from the company’s website.
The device is highly anticipate because of its ability to open up and flip out, and operate either as a tablet or a high end netbook. The Duo runs on the Windows 7 operating system and is powered by a dual core Atom processor.
Dell has embarked on a strategy to aggressively compete with Apple in the tablet segment of the market. In a zinger squarely aimed at the iPad, Dave Zavelson, a Dell marketing executive said: “There are times that you have to do work. Tablets are great for entertainment, but they aren’t exactly conducive to productivity,”
Mr. Zavelson made his comments during an Intel developer conference in September after which he revealed the device’s hidden keyboard.
Dell Australia will most likely release the Inspiron Duo sometime in 2011.

Dell To Launch Inspiron Duo By The Year End
Computer manufacturing giant Dell says it will release its Inspiron Duo Netbook Tablet Soon. Though the concept of a dual use tablet notebook has been around for a long time, they have not proved to be very popular amongst consumers.
Dell however plans to change the lack of interest by introducing a more affordable device in the Dell Inspiron Duo, which has the ability to function as both a tablet and a netbook.
In the past dual tablet laptop devices have utilised a twisting mechanism to function on a dual use basis, however the Inspiron Duo has opted instead for a display that has the ability to flip inside its bezel.
The Dell Inspiron Duo will be powered by the Windows 7 operating system, with Dell providing a touch friendly user interface which it has developed itself, making the device more user friendly.
Analysts believe that the device will probably manage to carve out its own niche in the market. The device features a 10-inch screen and can operate just as if it is a netbook. It will also come with a JBL docking station giving the device better audio and video capability.
Tech website Engadget had reports that the device will be powered by a dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor. It is expected that the device will be available on Dell.com by the end of the year.

Dell To Kill Adamo Product Range
It has been a while since Dell has launched any new models from its XPS range, however the after a hiatus, the company has launched three new laptops and the company has announced that it is ending the Adamo range of computers, to focus exclusively on the Alienware, Inspiron and XPS ranges.
With the launch of the three new laptops, Dell is aiming to target multimedia consumers and families. The new machines are available in 14-inch, 15.6-inch and 17-inch screens, and are powered by Intel’s Core i5 460M CPU chips, 1GB NVIDIA 420M graphics chip, 500 GB of hard drive storage and 4GB of RAM.
The new models should be released by Dell Australia sometime next year.
The launch of the new XPS models coincides with Dell’s decision to finish with its Adamo range as the company embarks on a multi-million dollar advertising blitz. Dell’s decision is driven by a desire to shed its reputation as a low cost manufacturer of cheaper computers. Dell is seeking to position itself as a rival and alternative to Apple, by emphasizing its premium range and has no fears of stamping its products with higher prices.
“We’re going to stop mentioning price as the single important aspect,” Paul-Henri Ferrand, chief marketing officer for Dell’s global consumer, and small and medium business division, told Reuters.
Earlier in the week Dell executives confirmed that the company was in the midst of reorganizing its product ranges and intended to focus on three core brands going forward. The company will focus on its Alienware range aimed at gamers, whilst its Inspiron range will be aimed at casual users, whilst its XPS will constitute its premium range of laptop computers.
For those who are fans of the super slim Adamo range, there is no need to mourn the death of the product range, super slim Dell products are not disappearing for good, Dell says that fans should expect super slim XPS models next year.
