Lenovo Launches Foray Into Television Space

Lenovo Computers Australia recently announced the launch of its first smart television offering powered by the Android operating system from Google.

Lenovo’s first smart television the K91, is the first such product developed by the world’s second largest PC manufacturer, and comes at a time when a number of rival manufacturers such as Sony, Samsung and LG also ready plans to enter the space.

Televisions were a major focus at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, with a huge variety of internet enabled hybrids interestingly enough running Android, as they seek to combine the traditional television set with the interactive internet, so that consumers can access the huge quantity of content from sites such as You Tube.

Apple’s next major product innovation is the hotly anticipated upgrade of its Apple TV product, which many company watchers expect will be launch later in the year.
Lenovo will roll out the K91 initially only in China, the device is the first television powered by the Google operating system that will make use of the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android. The television will come pre-loaded with as many as 100 applications from marketplace, and include a touch screen remote which can be voice controlled through an in built microphone.

In a further sign that the borders in the technology world are increasingly blurring, Lenovo also announced plans for a smartphone it calls the S2. The device has a 3.8 inch screen, and includes the automated cloud sync feature, enabling users to store data on the web.

CES was most productive for Lenovo, which also unveiled a new hybrid tablet, with docking feature for a keyboard, aimed at competing with what is widely expected to be a range of ultrabooks that are expected to be launched this year. Ultrabooks are very thin laptops which are extremely powerful, and the segment is expected to prove extremely popular, with over 60 models being unveiled at CES from different manufacturers.

Rival Acer could well be the pick of the bunch with its Aspire S5 model, measuring just 15 millimeters, and a 13.3 inch screen is 2 mm thinner than the Macbook Air.

Lenovo To Upgrade ThinkPad Tablets To Android 4.0

Lenovo To Upgrade ThinkPad Tablets To Android 4.0

As technology bellwethers get ready to participate in the MWC, all of them are falling over each other to display the latest in software and hardware. For its part, Lenovo Computers Australia last year launched three tablets running the Honeycomb version of the Android operating system. The company has since announced that it will upgrade first its enterprise ThinkPad tablet to Android 4.0 by the second quarter of the year.

The date for upgrade roll out is still unknown, but it is most likely that the upgrade will be rolled out over the air, as is the case with previous upgrades Lenovo has undertaken in the past with other products. The upgraded version of Android is both faster and slicker than previous versions, offering better connectivity, and improvements to the multimedia experience and running of applications.

The version of Android is the first from Google designed specifically to support tablets and smartphones, which means all the apps you have should work on both your phone and your tablet.

Ice Cream sandwich the latest version of Android’s OS has certain default features that are likely to be omitted from Lenovo’s ThinkPad tablet, because the device cannot support those features in terms of the hardware it posses. Android Beam is one such feature, an application which enables two devices to quickly share data such as contact information, simply by bumping two phones running the same Android OS together, will not work on the ThinkPad tablet, because it does not possess Near Field Communication capability.
Despite this fact, the upgraded ThinkPad tablet is likely to gain a slight advantage over competing products such as the Cius tablet from Cisco.
Lenovo is not the only device manufacturer with plans to integrate ICS into their tablets. Motorola has already updated its Wi-Fi capable Xoom’s, and pretty soon the Honeycomb version of Android is likely to go the way of the dinosaur.
